They Consumed All. They Left Nothing - a preview of Tyranids in the upcoming The Eye of Terror expansion

The Black Crusade Expansion Project is proud to preview the Tyranid cards in the upcoming expansion, The Eye of Terror, for Warhammer 40,000 Conquest!

The Imperium of Man battles with the Greenskins while Eldar and Dark Eldar alike rush to slow the horde of servants of Khorne that pour forth from the Eye of Terror. The Tau fight to claim worlds for the Greater Good while the Necrons continue to awaken.

But while these conflicts rage on another force slowly creeps into the Sector. With an unrelenting hunger and a hive mind stonger than any of the other races can even fathom, the Tyranids enter into the battle...

Within The Eye of Terror expansion you will find 29 individual, new cards with which to wage this war! You may field new Deep Strike cards to bolster the Dark Angels and other factions as well. New Necron cards will focus on healing and enslavement of other factions. Ork players will also find new and creative opportunities to make use of salaveged vehicles!

"It is a conscience so staggering that we will never comprehend it."

Within this expansion, you will find 4 new Tyranid cards that will further push the Hive Mind specialization as well as infestation.

The Leviathan Hive Ship had previously entered the Travis Sector but now, so too comes a Hive Ship from Fleet Behemoth. With this 0 cost Unique support you can "make" money by deploying units with the Hive Mind specialization the very same turn you play this card! This can greatly increase the value of playing certain units such as Adamant Hive Guard, Swarm Guard and many more!

You will also find 3 copies of Strip the Planet Dry, a 0 cost event that rewards you for winning a battle at the first planet. It will reward you even more if that planet is infested! With this you can generate resources to further ambush in Genestealer units in your Subject: Omega-X62113 decks or include it to better incorporate the infest mechanic in decks for the other two warlords. This can further push the potency of cards like Shrieking HarpyBlazing ZoanthropeToxic VenomthropeDigestion Pool and many more!

Next up we see the Hellgaunt, a ferocious Gaunt sub-species. Here we see another direct benefit to running an infestation deck. For the cost of 1 resource you get a 1 command, 1 ATK, 1 HP unit that gets stronger at certain planets. But unlike other factions where units gain stats when at planets with certain icons, these little creatures get even stronger while at at infested planet. Because infesting a planet often requires set up and a cost to the Tyranid player (rather than just a green icon showing up on the planet flop) these fanged baddies will get +1 ATK and +2HP when fully operational!

Finally, we see a creature feared throughout the Traxis Sector! Heard of, and from, by many within the Imperium, this Hive Tyrant - Subject M17c1-1 - finally has come to the front lines of battle itself! Unique and Elite, this heavy hitter has built in protection from many of your opponant's potential combat tricks. Subject M17c1-1 generates a Termagant token upon deployment. Further still, once per phase, this unit can stop an enemy army unit's attack dead in it's tracks by offering up a Tyranid unit at the same planet as fodder!

Look for The Eye of Terror to hit OCTGN and be available for print-and-play in January of 2017!

Thus, Blood Must Ever Be Spilt - a preview of the upcoming "The Eye of Terror" Expansion

The Black Crusade Expansion Project is proud to preview our first expansion, The Eye of Terror, for Warhammer 40,000 Conquest!

Devastated by war, the armies of the grim, dark future have retreated from Nectavus. The great WAAAGH! of Orks claimed victory there and now set their sights on the planet of Armageddon. Imperial and Eldar forces alike are regrouping, looking to stop the green horde before they can strengthen their grip on the Traxis Sector.

But in their haste to face the Orks the Imperium has left a weakness in their defense against the forces of Chaos. Even now the legions of Khorne pour forth from the Eye of Terror, frothing to lay waste to any force in their way. Can they be stopped?

Within The Eye of Terror expansion you will find 29 individual, new cards with which to wage this war! You may field new Tau cards to strengthen your units with attachments as well as further augment those human forces who have joined the Greater Good. New Eldar and Dark Eldar cards will feature cards that focus on the Mobility keyword and Torture trait, respectively. The Tyranids will have ways to further benefit from infestation and will be fielding a new, Unique army unit (that all have heard mention of during their battles in the Traxis Sector): A Hive Tyrant known to humanity as Subject M17c1-1.....

Blood for the Blood God

Within this expansion, you will find 3 new Khorne cards to bolster the forces of Chaos, and Ba’ar Zul the Hate-bound specifically.

Juggernauts of Khorne are fearsome beasts, the Blood God’s steeds and a manifestation of rage unbridled. With 4 ATK and 5 HP these Elite units can wreak havoc in a battle, but their rage and hatred truly overflow once the battle gets bloody. If you control a Bloodied warlord this army unit gains +4HP and the Brutal keyword!

We also see a new Chaos event: Cower Before Me! This Tactic and Khorne trait card lets you surprise the enemy with damage before combat even begins! After your warlord commits to a planet you can deal damage to any non-warlord unit at that planet. That damage is equal to the printed ATK value of any non-Elite Khorne unit you control at that planet. Pick off a command unit or weaken a hearty army unit for 1 or 2 points of damage. Or, if you control a Bloodied Ba’ar Zul, take someone out of the fight by dealing a whopping 3 damage to them.

Lastly, we see an attachment that is a weapon infused with the soul of a daemon, The Bloodfeeder. This piece of Wargear has a vampiric effect, granting additional ATK (or in certain cases, HP) to your units while also having the potential to heal them. It further expands the Bloodthirst specialization, allowing you to remove damage from the attached unit after another unit has been destroyed. The Blood God strengthens those who collect skulls in his name!

Look for The Eye of Terror to hit OCTGN and be available for print-and-play in January of 2017!

FALL 2016 - RECAP & REPORT

The Great WAAAGH! came smashing into Nectavus, and conquered all foes! Congrats to The Great Green Hope, Therion, for winning this season with Nazdreg!

Another Black Crusade season down – and this this time Elite decks showed up to say hello, in a big way!

Orks: Orks have arrived - 5 Orks in the Top Cut (3 NazzyD, 2 Zoggy). They won it all. Overall they only had a 48% win rate as a faction, but they had the most games played with 93. Nazzy D had the most pledges with 14. NazzyD took home the trophy with a 48% win rate (middle of the pack) and 3rd most appearances by any warlord. Zoggy led the Green Horde in terms of win rate - 63% (only behind Eldoarth and Kith) in 24 games. Poor Gorzod brought up the rear - 4 wins in 17 games.

Necrons: 7th place in terms of games played (60) and tied for SM at 6th place for win rate at 47%. It might still be too early to tell just how good this faction is but the ally choices always make for some interesting decks and these guys can get the elite train rolling as well as anybody. Anrakyr did make it to the final. He did the best of the robots as well - 50% win rate in 30 games. Nahumek had a 44% win rate in 27 games. Szeras went 1-2. The jury's still out on him....

Eldar: Best win rate (61%) and the second most games played for the Space Elves (82). Eldorath had the highest win-percentage, and the most # of games played, of any Warlord with 65% and 66 games logged. 4 pledges in the Top Cut. Sometimes the classics work the best Even with the meta shifting away from swarms where Drone Defense System does less work, Old One Hand did work. His ally rate with DE went back up where Tau dropped off. Shrieking Exarch…that’s a thing. Fharenal did quite well in her small sample size (primarily piloted by Intolerance - he took her to the Top 8). She had a 58% win-rate in 12 games. Baharroth…. 0-4….moving on…

Dark Eldar: Second best win rate (56%) and tied with AM for third most games played (81). No surprise that Kith did well – second best win rate (64%) and third most games played (55). Again, the classics sometimes work best. 3 pledges in the Top Cut. Urien’s win rate dropped from last season (No Seth Rosen this season can probably explain that). He showed up 21 times but didn’t make the Top Cut. Morn saw a huge dip in popularity – 5 games played, 40% win rate. No Top Cut appearances.

Chaos: Third best win rate (53%) and fifth most games played (80). Ku’gath Elites…maybe you’ve heard of them. The Papa of Pestilence rose in power this season. He had the 7th best win rate (57%) and the second most games played (65, trailing Eldorath by 1). He went 4-0 in the Top 32 then went 0-4 in the Top 16. Zarathur…sometimes the old classics get out-gunned by the new hotness. What began as a measly 4 pledges petered out at 1 remaining after 6 weeks of swiss. 40% win rate and 5 games played…oof! Even Barstool showed up 9 times (for a 33% win rate). Vhashaelhur made 1 brief appearance and lost his game.

Astra Militarum: Tied with Dark Eldar for fourth most appearances at 81 games but had the second-worst win rate with only 44%. Best in faction was actually Colonel Straken! 5 pledges, 50% win rate and 30 games played. 2 in the Top Cut (going 2-2). Worr fell off a cliff. He only began with 2 pledges, finished with none and had a poor showing in the other areas as well: 46% win rate, 13 games played. That’s odd to me as his swarm can deal with elites by winning the battles of attrition and he doesn’t have to be at a planet to benefit from his ability and risk getting knocked out cold. Perhaps his decline has to do with AM players trying out Grigory Maksim. Tank Daddy showed up 31 times but only won 35% of his games. He might not quite be there yet. TC Hammer did well – 57% win rate (thanks to ellonellanfair, the only person who played him for his 7 appearances).

Space Marines: More than a bit of a dip in popularity here. Are mid-range decks hurt the most by our new elite heavy meta? Last season there were an incredible 220 games logged as SM. This season? Only 77 – good for 6th best. Their win rate was in the middle of the pack with 47%. Mavros won the most – 60% but only showed up 10 times (vs 82 last season) and didn't have a showing in the Top Cut. Vezuel showed up the most – 33 games – and won a respectable 52%. He was the only SM in the Top Cut, where he made it to the Top 16. Cato – 45% win rate in 20 games. And then we have poor Ragnar bringing up the rear: 29% win rate in only 14 games…

Tau: The second least played faction at 54 games. Win rate was middle of the pack with 48%. Dnapolitano did take Starballz (54% win rate in 13 games) to the Top Cut. Aun’shi did slightly better with a 55% win rate in 22 games (but no Top Cut showing). Shadowsun brought up the rear with a 37% win rate in 19 games.

Tyranids: The least played faction (31 games) and the worst win rate (42%). Old One Eye did make it to the Top Cut (where he lost both games in the first round) with a 47% win rate in 19 games. Subject Omega also saw a dip in popularity with only a 30% win rate in 10 games. Swarmlord was among the bottom feeders. He only had 1 pledge, which didn’t last. He played a measly 2 games, going 1-1.

Again, the “Pledge your Loyalty” system seemed to work out well. Despite the large number of drops (thanks a lot, cancellation announcement) overall loyalty rates remained pretty high. 63% of pledged players remained loyal. The Warlords that didn’t lose any pledges throughout the season: Colonel Straken, Anrakyr, Nahumek, Old Zogwort, Subject Omega, Ba’ar-Zul, TC Hammer and Baharroth. Of the 32 Top Cut players, 23 of them stuck with their pledge all season (the exact same as last season, oddly enough). Here’s what loyalty rates looked like at the start, the end and in the Top Cut:

Dark Eldar reigned supreme in the MVP dept. – Venomous Fiend got 11 votes (yes, you read that right – I’m including it in the DE column), Archon’s Terror got 10 votes and Klaivex tied for third with 8. Corrupted Teleportarium also had 8. The old big-and-bad Helldrake got 7 votes and the new big-and-bad  Squiggoth Brute got 5, as did Clearcut Refuge (which pairs nicely with said Squiggoth).

That’s about as much detail as I’ll get into since you can check out all the stats for yourself at DNapolitano’s webpage HERE.

I've also updated the Daemon Princes and Chosen page to reflect this season's Top 32 and best Player for each Warlord HERE.

As always the comments section was full of some venting and chuckle-inducing-comments. I’ve listed them below for your enjoyment.

Also below you will find a breakdown of the Top Cut of 32. Interesting info there.

So, in closing – THANK YOU to all who participated. An extra THANK YOU if you donated prizes or money to support The Black Crusade League. Lastly, an EXTRA BIG THANK YOU to my Mournival: Paul, Mitch and Dan. Your help was immeasurable.

I hope to see all of you (and more of your friends) next season! Registration opens January 8th, 2017. The game may be canceled but it’s NOT dead. So come back for next season (where we’ll have some new cards). See you then.
